Hydrodermabrasion - the latest in skincare treatments

Move over microdermabrasion.

Hydrodermabrasion is a big step forward in skincare technology.

I had the treatment at Fiore Medi.Spa in Canberra and I love it.

What is it?

Hydrodermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment. A high velocity jet stream infuses purified water and oxygen into the skin as the diamond crystal nozzle makes its way across the face and neck.

Veronica Johnson from Fiore Medi.Spa says it creates hydrated and healthier looking skin.

"Hydrodermabrasion has the ability to actively moisturise the skin during the treatment process and this sets it aside from other skin resurfacing procedures available such as traditional microdermabrasion, chemical peeling and laser treatments," she says.

The process

My makeup was removed and my skin then cleansed with one of four containers of purified water as the nozzle gently moved across my skin.

Next the process was repeated to extract impurities from the skin, using water in the second and third containers.

The final step is key - a vitamin lotion added to the purified water that is applied directly onto the skin as the diamond crystal does its final sweeps.

Veronica changes up the nozzle for a more gentle one which allows her to get in around the delicate eye area.

This means you can hydrate under the eye and the treatment also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“The machine has four different containers which can be utilised for different solutions to use on different skin conditions such as dehydration, oily or acne prone skin and even pigmentation,” Veronica says.

Microderm vs Hydroderm

Both exfoliate the skin in sweeping motions, using a nozzle.

The key difference is the tip of the nozzle and the injection of water combined with oxygen into the skin.

“The treatment works differently to traditional microdermabrasion due to the spiral shape of the tip which has multiple abrasive edges,” Veronica says.

“The skin is exfoliated several times as the tip is moved over it, while the serums applied from the containers soften the skin making it easier to extract away impurities.”

Who can have it done

It’s safe for anyone and I had it done while pregnant. It also uses all natural products.

“It improves the overall appearance of skin giving a healthy glow and youthful appearance,” Veronica says.

It can be done on the face and body and in addition to its hydrating and anti-ageing benefits, can treat acne scarring, stretch marks and cellulite.

You can have hydrodermabrasion done every two weeks and Veronica can work out a treatment plan for your specific skin concerns.

You will need to put on sunscreen after the treatment and you can apply makeup right on top. There’s no down time.

My verdict

It took half an hour and any redness was gone after 20 minutes.

The herbal lotions added to the water make it a smell sensation and it was relaxing. My skin felt so smooth straight away and looked bright and hydrated.

A few days later, it looked even better.

I will definitely get it done again.
