Why shopping local means so much more

We're always asked to shop local and those words often get lost on us. Big brands have big ads and big names selling their products, we can get lost in the hype. So to get back to the roots, I've had a chat to one of the members of a Canberra initiative that brings together local brands in one store.

Trove Canberra has opened a new store in the centre of the City - a treasure trove of beautiful handmade products from fashion to homewares, jewellery, millinery, soaps, candles and ceramics.

Everything is made in Australia.

One of the members is Jade Sargent - the incredible milliner behind the label Sovata (scroll down to the bottom of this page to find out more about Jade and see some of her designs). She says it's amazing how much talent there is in Canberra.

"We have members who work with fabric, fibre, glass, clay, wood, resin, precious metals and stones, wax, paint and paper. With these skills we cover a wide range of products, from wooden chopping boards, resin jewellery and adults and children’s clothing to original paintings and glass dishes," she says.

"The great thing is our members are always experimenting and developing their skills so they’re making new items all the time and we have new members joining us regularly, adding even more variety. Our shop is an ever-changing, dynamic and creative space."

Every dollar spent in Trove Canberra goes directly to the person who made the items. It's a team effort that takes the risk out of going solo.

The Trove team calls this the beginning of a new chapter for lovers of homemade goods.
